It was an eventful night at yesterday evening’s Brit Awards. Held at O2 Arena in London, the night belonged to Ed Sheeran and Adele who both came up trumps by scooping 2 awards each. The night kicked off with an explosive opening set from Coldplay and continued to reach fever pitch as Rihanna strutted her stuff live on stage, One Direction causing a shock by winning Best Single and an acceptance speech being rudely interrupted before the night was given an almighty loud send off thanks to Blur.
Adele performed her hit ‘Rolling In The Deep’ to an audience of suits and fans who were left amazed by a performance which only confirmed further that she deserves every accolade she has been given. Last night she walked away with two awards including British Female Solo Artist and the coveted MasterCard British Album Of The Year. Adele was then rudely brushed aside during her acceptance speech for ‘Best Album’ when organisers instructed host James Corden to interrupt due to the show running behind schedule. Some critics believe the delay was down to Blur frontman Damon Albarn’s acceptance speech for the Outstanding Contribution To Music award, taking up too much time. Adele subsequently flipped her middle finger to the crowd in frustration, which she later explains was aimed at ‘the Brits Suits’:
“I flipped the finger but it wasn’t to my fans. I’m sorry if I offended anyone but it was the ‘suits’ that offended me. Thank you all very much and thanks to my fans. I don’t want them to think I was swearing at them.”
Ed Sheeran took to the Brits stage for the first time in his young career when the 21yr old performed an emotional rendition of the hugely popular track ‘Lego House’. He also left with two awards for British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act. Whilst making the journey to collect his second award, he seemed genuinely surprised and thanked his manager who he forgot to mention first time round for turning the “spotty, chubby, ginger teenager into the person up here tonight.”
Coldplay returned to the stage later on, this time receiving the award for ‘Best British Group’ for an impressive third time, previously winning in 2001 and 2003. Singer Chris Martin responded to the award simply saying:
“To be honest, most British bands have split up,' Chris said. 'Blur have gone, Pulp have gone, Take That are on holiday, we're the only British band left on the pitch! But we'll take that.”
Noel Gallagher also enlisted the services of the Coldplay frontman when he gave one of the strongest performances of the night with a storming rendition of ‘AKA… What A Life’ featuring Chris on piano.
Other performances included Olly Murs performing ‘Heart Skips A Beat’ with Rizzle Kicks. Vocalist Florence Welch dancing her way through a theatrical version of Florence and the Machine’s new single ‘No Light, No Light’. Bruno Mars bopped around on stage with his smooth jazz-like version of ‘Just The Way You Are’ and collecting the award for Best International Male.
Painted dancers and glass boxes were brought onto the stage for Rihanna’s performance of ‘We Found Love’ shortly after winning Best International Female and Lana Del Rey also wowed the crowd winning Best International Breakthrough Act. The 25yr old American gracefully entered onto the stage giving heartfelt praise to the British public during her acceptance speech:
“Without the support of everyone in this room and everyone in the UK, I’d really be lost. So thank you, I love you.”
Blur wrapped up the night with a greatest hits medley after receiving the award for Outstanding Contribution To Music. Frontman Damon Albarn accepted the award with a lengthy speech which included:
“Thank you very much .The last time we were here was 17 years ago and what happened that night seemed to have a really profound effect on our lives so it's very nice to come back and say thank you very much for this honour.”
The 11-minute performance medley included their hits ‘Girls and Boys’, ‘Song 2’ and ‘Parklife’.
